UK Backs Progress in US–Iran Talks, Urges Lasting Diplomatic Solution

(MENAFN) According to reports, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed support on Sunday for recent movement toward a possible understanding between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the importance of sustained international coordination to achieve a durable diplomatic resolution.

Speaking on social media platform X, Starmer said Britain intends to cooperate with international partners to make the most of what he described as an opening for lasting stability.

He added: "We need to see an agreement that brings the conflict to an end and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation,"

He also reaffirmed London’s position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, stating that Iran "must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon" and underscored that the government would continue working to safeguard British nationals from the effects of the ongoing tensions.

According to reports, Starmer further noted: "We will work with our international partners to seize this moment and achieve a long-term diplomatic settlement,"

Meanwhile, following discussions with regional leaders, US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that an agreement with Iran aimed at ending the conflict that began on Feb. 28 and resulted in the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz was "largely negotiated" and now awaiting final completion.
