Starmer Emphasizes UK’s Neutral Stance on Iran War Amid NATO Tensions
During a press briefing in London, Starmer explained that his administration is moving quickly to encourage de-escalation and promote diplomatic solutions, while recognizing that the crisis could still have long-term consequences for the UK.
He revealed that an upcoming meeting led by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will focus on strengthening maritime security in the Gulf region. Afterward, military officials are expected to gather to evaluate how best to “marshal our capabilities” to guarantee that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure once hostilities subside.
When questioned about whether the public should adjust their daily habits in response to ongoing energy concerns, Starmer said authorities are “carefully” observing developments.
He also emphasized the importance of stronger cooperation with European partners in areas such as defense, security, and economic planning, particularly in light of uncertainty surrounding US commitments to NATO.
"Whatever the pressure on me and others, whatever the noise, I'm going to act in the British national interest in all decisions that I make, and that's why I've been absolutely clear that this is not our war, or we're not going to get dragged into it," he added.
His statements followed comments from Trump, who, as stated by reports, is contemplating pulling the US out of NATO after allied nations declined to support the Iran conflict.
