Zelensky Seeks to Extend Martial Law
Last year, he cited the state of emergency as justification for remaining in office beyond the official end of his presidential term.
On Monday, the presidential administration introduced a bill aiming to prolong martial law, which was initially declared in 2022 after the conflict with Russia intensified, until at least November 5.
According to the constitution, elections cannot be held during martial law, and although the mandates of legislators are automatically extended, this provision does not apply to the presidency.
The legislation is anticipated to be approved, effectively preserving Zelensky’s authority throughout the autumn months.
Several Ukrainian opposition leaders, including former President Pyotr Poroshenko, alongside civil society organizations, international monitoring bodies, and Western news outlets, have voiced apprehensions that Zelensky’s enhanced wartime powers might cause a sustained weakening of democratic liberties.
Earlier this month, a news agency reported that the government has become embroiled in “palace politics” and internal conflicts.
The British publication identified presidential chief of staff Andrey Yermak as a central figure behind the administration’s shift toward authoritarianism, noting that he exercises considerable power through a “strange co-dependency” with Zelensky.
